Welcome to the International Symposium on hepatic Glycogen Storage Diseases
April 4 – 6, 2012, Lyon, France

The Inserm Unit 855 – University Lyon 1 and the French GSD Association (Association Francophone des Glycogénoses) are pleased to announce an international symposium dedicated to Glycogen Storage Diseases Type I and Type III. These rare diseases affect glucose metabolism mainly in the liver. However, the majority of Type I patients develop kidney and intestine complications, and muscles are affected in many Type 3 patients. The present treatment consists of pharmaceutical therapy together with an individually tailored diet. As patients grow older, age-dependent complications occur: hepatic adenomas, glomerulosclerosis in Type I, and hepatic fibrosis/cirrhosis and (cardio-)myopathy in Type III. The hope to cure these genetic diseases including their late-onset complications is now focused on gene therapy.
We cordially invite you to participate in this symposium, which takes place in Lyon from April 4th - 6th 2012. Outstanding international experts will review the following topics:
• Glucose metabolism in neonates
• A global overview of glycogen metabolism
• Liver pathology: steatosis, fibrosis, hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas and the role of dietary treatment on pathophysiology
• Review of kidney, intestinal and muscle complications
• New advances in gene therapy
It is the intention of the organizers of this symposium to contribute to improved treatment, and, thereby the overall prognosis in GSD Type I and III. The results of the symposium will facilitate a worldwide harmonisation of existing guidelines for these diseases.
It will be a pleasure to welcome you in Lyon,
Fabienne Rajas and Philip Maes
